A book project done for local writer Gabrielia Sooklal. Gabrielia blends playwriting and poetry in Bamboo Stories, exploring themes of regional history, culture, love and community. When we spoke, it was very clear that the visuals were going to be rooted in fantasy. She was clear about wanting to use the moko jumbies and the steelpan as key symbols. We decided on using the steelpan as a compositional structure versus including it as a symbol, organizing the elements in loose rings around each other. As a designer, I enjoy subtle details like that. It's not entirely obvious but it's very much there. It makes it better that it is something of us - T & T - when a lot of what we're taught in school/what educators (myself included) teach in school is based on Western schools of Visual Arts thought.
