16 Days of Activism, abbreviated from 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a global call to action against the violence faced by women and girls everywhere. It begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls (25 Nov) and ends on Human Rights Day (10 Dec).
Individuals and organizations have an opportunity and a responsibility to join the cause and spread the word.
Gender-based violence manifests itself as sexual violence such as assault and rape, intimate partner violence, trafficking, abduction, female genital mutilation, child marriages and digital violence such as image-based sexual exploitation which affects women and girls much more than their male counterparts. The statistics around gender-based violence faced by women are disturbing.
Women and girls often find themselves more vulnerable in times of emergencies with 1 in 5 displaced/refugee woman/girl facing sexual violence. When placed in emergencies, access to support or health care is also diminished for them.
In 2023, every 10 minutes a woman or girl is killed by a partner or family member. 60% of female homicides were committed by family members or partners.
1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime and 1 in 4 adolescent girls suffer abuse at the hands of their partners.
